My name is Melandra Ardotalia Smith (nee Bethell) and I was raised and educated by my parents in the Strines, on the wild moors of the Dark Peak. My mother is a graphic designer, and I have been painting and drawing since the age of three. My early influences are the Pre Raphaelites, and to my father's delight I reproduced for him some of John William Waterhouse's great works, in oil and acrylic. When I met my husband, Paul, in 1999, who works in Dowlow Quarry, my artistic interests turned towards the Peak District, surrounded by its many quarries, and these being abundant in working machinery and buildings which really caught my eye in their strange dilapidated beauty. Since then I have been painting the PeakDistrict, and have done quite a few "quarry" pieces, as well as landscapes and local beauty spots. I now live with my husband in Taddington villge, between Buxton and Bakewell. Taddington is a beautiful place with a handsome church and many picture perfect cottages, and I am also enjoying painting watercolours of the village. I love Klimt and am exploring using gold and silver patterning in my landscapes. In addition to being an artist, I am the drummer in a local rock band, Voodoo Doll, who's music can be heard on www.overplay.co.uk/voodoodoll. Have a listen!
